The Swansea Police Department DARE (Drug
Abuse Resistance Education) program was started in 1993 by
then Officer Robert Cabral. Officer Cabral was trained in
the core curriculum in 1993. The program is taught at the
sixth grade at Joseph Case Jr. High School. Students
received 10 weeks of instruction from “Officer Bob” as he is
known. All 17 lessons of DARE are covered as well as other
important topics.
D.A.R.E. is a pr ogram
that was started in 1983 by The Los Angeles Police
Department and the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Currently D.A.R.E. is taught in 80% of the schools in this
country and has established programs in 55 countries around
the world. There are 5 curriculums that the DARE Officer
can teach. They are K-4, Core (5 or 6), Middle School, High
School and the parent curriculum. Private donations fund
the development of curriculums, research, and training of
DARE officres worldwide.
Until his untimely death Lt. Robert Cabral was the DARE instructor
at the Jr. High School. Lt. Cabral held various offices within the DARE community. He
was past
President of Massachusetts DARE Officers Association, with 5
years of service to its executive board and was an active member
of the M.D.O.A. color guard. He will be
sadly missed. |
